trip to jeju island

scooter ride route in Samda-do

Cycling around Jeju Island is a popular summer activity in South Korea.

You may enjoy fantastic beaches, Korean food, and volcanic landscapes along the trip. Hardcore athletes can complete the trek in one day, while slow travelers can take one to two weeks. You may camp near the beach for free or stay in comfortable, inexpensive accommodations. Best of all, Jeju offers several bicycle trails and calm country roads that wind through the island’s beautiful countryside, making it a fantastic family riding vacation. We recommend our latest eBook Jeju Island – A Slow Travel Adventure Guidebook for full google map routes, bike hiring, and more.A well-established bike route around the island, largely along the coast. Going that way won’t hurt. We first cycled around the island this way.

Ansong Village To Hwasun

From route 1132, you can easily reach Hwasun, which is home to a beautiful beach and makes for a great overnight stay if you decide to skip the far southwestern tip of Jeju. This quick cut leads you along rural back roads, past quaint farming communities, picturesque fields, and wooded areas. The finest thing is that the entire 612 kilometers are graced by a breathtaking panorama of Dan Mountain and Sambang Mountain. This was definitely my fave piece of riding in all of my three visits around Jeju – it’s very wonderful!

Donnaeko To Wimi Village

On our most recent trip in 2013, we took a detour out to Donnaeko to camp and swim in the crystal-clear river there. You can avoid the noisy, boring, windy, and unattractive stretch of coastal route east of Seogwipo City by taking the 10 km detour from Donnaeko to Wimi Villlage. You’ll have a thrilling downhill ride down to the ocean after a stretch of flat, meandering, rural roads with few traffic and a wide shoulder.

Pyoseon Village To Onpyeong Village Via Songeup Traditional Village

This 20km diversion takes you away from the coast at Pyoseon in the south-eastern part of Jeju, to explore Songeup Traditional Village – a pleasantly well-preserved community portraying what daily life was like on Jeju during the Joseon Dynasty. After then, it takes tranquil country roads back to the ocean. Aside from a short length along route 1119, the roads in this area are narrow and relatively quiet, and the terrain is lush, green, and teeming with life.

Gimnyeong To Jeju City

We’ve always found the seaside road that connects Gimnyeong Village and Jeju City to be dull, blustery, filthy, and congested with vehicles. There is a significant increase in risk as the route connects with Route 1132 and enters the outskirts of Jeju city, since it then travels via tiny, busy streets with no capacity for bikes and places the bike-lane on the pavement, which is also narrow, uneven, and full of pedestrians. We recently traveled along a 33-kilometer path that skirts the main thoroughfares and takes you to Manjanggul Cave, a massive lava tunnel you can walk through that is so beautiful it is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. From Manjanggul until you reach the outskirts of Jeju City, you will travel via peaceful backroads through a picturesque landscape of apparently unending untamed forests punctuated by the odd orange plantations. If you have a chance, check out our new film, Jeju: A Bicycle Adventure in South Korea, which features footage from several of these routes.
